Big news. The Foo Fighters have just announced their new drummer, and it’s none other than Josh Freese. If you’re not familiar with him, Freese is a session drummer who’s recently been playing with the Offspring. He’s stepping into the shoes of the band’s late drummer Taylor Hawkins, who we sadly lost last year.

The band spilled the beans on Sunday (May 21) during their livestream event called Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts. This was a studio session recorded at the group’s 606 studios in Northridge, California.

Now, excluding Dave Grohl, Freese is actually the third drummer to join Foo Fighters. Before Hawkins, William Goldsmith was on the drums for the band’s 1997 album The Colour and Shape.

The livestream had a fun little segment where they hinted that famous drummers would join the lineup. Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers (a buddy of the late Hawkins) showed up to say he was being blocked in by a different car outside the studio. Tommy Lee popped in to deliver some takeout for the band. Tool’s Danny Carey showed up to drop off some dogs he apparently groomed for the group. The camera finally panned over to Freese, who seemed a bit annoyed that they hadn’t already started rehearsing.
