Depp v Heard Documentary: A Disturbing Exploitation of Domestic Violence or Just Another Ratings Grab

So, I just watched this documentary on Channel 4 called “Depp v Heard”. It’s all about the legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a downer.

The documentary is basically a mashup of courtroom footage, old interviews with Depp and Heard, news reports, and a ton of YouTube and TikTok clips. They’ve tried to put everything in chronological order and give a timeline of Depp and Heard’s relationship. They even put their testimonies side by side, like they’re asking us to decide who we believe.

Now, if you’re not up to speed, Depp sued Heard for defamation in 2019 after she wrote an article in the Washington Post where she called herself “a public figure representing domestic abuse”. Depp lost a separate libel case in the UK against the Sun, which had called him a “wife beater” in print. The US defamation hearing took place in 2022 in Virginia, and the jury ruled that Depp had been defamed by Heard. It also decided that in one matter, Depp had defamed Heard, but overall, it was seen as a win for Depp and a loss for Heard.

The whole trial was a bit of a circus, especially since the judge allowed cameras in the courtroom. This documentary is basically rehashing the whole thing, and it…
